It's not as though they can fly from EMA to FRA... So, given there is no guarantee of a flight deck visit (they are often busy on short haul unless there is a delay, and training flight might preclude it), I wouldn't take a connecting flight for the sake of a chance of visiting the flight deck.
This is a highly valid point and my initial concern in trying to avoid anything other than a direct flight

i think if a plane change is essential for any reason it would make most sense for it to be an overnight in a hotel stopover- we don’t really know how well this kid is going to fly I suppose and while my instinct is that he copes pretty well with just about everything, it is conceivable he might turn out to have raging plane sickness or something
