Last night got brutal. I'd like to give credit to UA for stepping up their game in shuffling schedules, but it's not like they didn't have weeks of advance warning for this.

And then some. On the LAX-SFO front...

UA420 (2:00p) canceled
UA460 (3:45p) on-time and upgauged to 77G
UA481 (6:30p) 0h41 late (A320)
UA283 (7:45p) canceled
UA2201 (9:00p) on-time and upgauged to 77G
UA2832 (9:00p) 2h25 late, extra section 77G
UA398 (10:45p) canceled

They seem to be trying very hard with the schedule and a lot of the morning flights have been doing okay, but it's horrifying that this mess cascaded on a weekend day. Meanwhile, closer to my attention, MSP-SFO was a complete mess yesterday and seems like UA has just given up on the route for the time being (includes OAL):

DL2688 (9:25a): arrived 1h58 late
DL1817 (11:45a): arrived 1h29 late
SY395 (12:00p): arrived 1h02 late
UA5774 (3:00p): canceled
DL1558 (3:45p): arrived 4h52 late
DL1505 (5:45p): arrived 4h59 late
DL1839 (8:38p): arrived 3h10 late*
SY398 (8:55p): arrived 3h21 late

*with the added insult of waiting 57 minutes for a gate.. at one in the morning.

Meanwhile today's

UA5774 (3:00p): canceled

and this was after UA dropped the morning flight from the schedule this month due to the runway work

I'm not interested in changing my flight dates because I'm flying in on Tuesday and coming back on Friday. Also my hotel reservation in TPE is non-refundable. I asked UA customer service what they would do if I don't make it on to UA871 due to a delayed arrival with UA243. The rep said if I'm stuck in SFO, then UA will give me a voucher for a hotel at SFO (don't know where) and reimburse me for my out of pocket expenses such as food. I just need to submit documents to UA's website. Is this true? Sounds a little too good to be true. I have no experience with this. I'm just surprised that UA wouldn't announce this back in August when I made my reservation with them. I had no idea that SFO would have a runway closed for construction work. Anyone here have experience with this in the past? I'm thinking it's possible I might even be stuck in DEN considering that some short haul flights to SFO have been cancelled.
I would strongly recommend routing via a different city or planning to overnight in SFO.

It may make sense because these wide-body planes carry more passengers per takeoff, so the number of passengers affected is minimized.
And today's UA243 is planning 2h00 late due to the GDP (wheels-up 1:21p right now). Yes, the international flights gets priority because of their size and also because the long stage length means they are exempt from the delay program (despite eating slots).

Of course for this case in SFO, gate departures can be on time but taxi time can be extensive due to runway limitations.
Yes and no. While this is true of the GDP, with 1R closed also SFO does not have enough runway capacity to accommodate its normal slate of departures. However, it's possible it can't get frames inbound fast enough for this to matter.
