I flew to TPE last Dec using MU, but in business. Routing was JFK-PVG-TPE-PVG-LAX and used miles for DCA-JFK and LAX-DCA. As flyerCO notes, J tickets on MU can be about $2000 rt to lots of Asia, from different US and Canada departures. Oz will be a bit more, but you will earn a lot of miles and because of the rules, with MQD at 40% of distance...
Interesting that it was a RTW trip - JFK-PVG flew eastbound over Greenland, Scandinavia, and Russia; I think it depends on prevailing winds which way the flight goes.
