In the bigger picture, shouldn't the more serious concern be that your local airport's (DL?) employees tend to treat the bag with a handgun like any other piece of checked luggage and send it out on the belt with the other bags? If the bag has a tag and/or zip tie indicating that it (could) contain a gun, someone could easily steal the bag for the gun, which could create some legal issues for you.
