It does seem like a good preventive measure though they really ought to mention it if that's what they're doing. To the best of my recollection I didn't have to do a contact transaction with my contactless CaptialOne VentureOne Visa either. I don't use the card that often and I think I've only done contactless transactions with it since getting it.
