The only reason I added the LHR-GVA leg is to reduce the price in about 1.5K, however today the price of IAD-LHR rt in F has been reduced and is the same as I paid for my original flight...

Is there a way to avoid the change fees, and ask AA to drop the LHR-GVA leg from the reservation?
There are no workarounds other than if there has been a schedule change then in certain scenarios you can get a free change and/or cancel for free. But for a ticket that you booked a week ago that's unlikely obviously. If the fare is now the same, not much you can do other than decide if paying the change fee is worth it to drop the LHR-GVA leg and not have to make your way back to London.
