There is also the case of married segment. I had a CX itinerary NRT-HKG-BKK booked for October with Avios in Business. NRT-HKG was not available on its own, and neither were some HKG-BKK flights. Only when I searched NRT-BKK was I able to make the Avios booking in Business.
