vanderbilt probably should have let it lie, since he's ahead on points, but decides to politely suggest that jfe doesn't seem to be (have been?) successful in his attempt and might want to try harder.

jfe and his buds launch on vanderbilt, the one who was gratuitously attacked in the first place.

This place has really changed. Vanderbilt, I apologize for the treatment you've received. You made a suggestion, and the person who is empowered to decide agreed with you. You did well. Simply ignore the spiteful ones, and continue to contribute. Most of the people appreciate it.
I believe that jfe's rolleyes was intended to the feeding frenzy that even a newcomer can cause if the right button is pressed. I did not read the rolleyes directed to vanderbilt but to the idea of a newbie jump and veteran FTers jumping.

From where I sit, vanderbilt's reply set off the harsh tone. Let me put in bold the parts of vanderbilt's reply that I found harsh.

I'm only a college student, but it seems to me that there are a lot more younger people on this UBB and it saddens me to think that some of them are moderators.

I did not make this decision. I merely suggested it as a way to improve Flyertalk. Some people out there agree with me, others don't. Deal with it.

Thank you.
I did not launch into vanderbilt but offered my reflection. See my response.

I have been around for a little while and I have seen jfe's welcoming hospitality to newcomers. I also am a frequent contributor to a forum that jfe moderates and can tell you that I believe him to be a great asset to FlyerTalk. jfe has been gracious to me and he is certainly welcome in my home.

There are 2 approaches a new member can take in their journey with FlyerTalk.

1) Engage topics in an abrupt and confrontational manner and sling out jabs at will.

or

2) Use restraint, think your response out before submitting the reply.

Of course I attempt to use approach #2 but I do fail from time to time. When I am wrong, I have apologized. Maybe you should think about how you want to be thought of here in FlyerTalk, and in the world. I will give you some slack as you are young and still learning how it is in this world. Take my advice, approach your differences and responses a little softer and with respect, even if the person you are responding to does not deserve it. Then again, what do I know? I have only been in customer service for the world's leading robotic system manufacturer dealing directly with people that are not happy with the product or service.

Best of luck in the future vanderbilt.
I am curious where I am being spiteful here. I offered some background of jfe and some sage advise as well. I even offered the closing which was meant as good will. So again, Counsellor, where am I spiteful? I am confused with your reply.
