Charter flights may still build technical stops into their routes. Bangor in Maine used to be a regular refuelling stop for charters between Europe and the US West Coast, maybe it still plays that role.
These days Bangor mostly serves as an alterante for diversions, and an exotic destination for people flying around with newish RR engines.
