I just want to thank everyone who helped me get this resolved. He is 1030 miles short of another free US ticket. It would have taken him forever to get it on variable so I'm glad I caught it when I did. Sadly, he'd only be 230 short if his preferences hadn't changed, but that's neither here nor there.
The bottom line is Hilton knew they'd catch many of their busier clients sleeping and made the change to save them money. I don't agree with it and think it is bad customer service. But I guess that's why I'm no longer actively staying with Hilton.
