This is done to avoid to have 2 flights the same day with the same flight number (the delayed one and the regular flight of the day). Outside North America, AF just add a letter to the flight number (e.g. AF244A), but this letter is incompatible with DL systems. So in North America, AF just give a completely different flight number in the AF4XXX bucket.
