When the funds get credited back does it expired a year from when it was first booked. Or the travel date?

If there is a chance you might cancel, and the SAME people would not be flying within a year, then you should transfer points vs booking via CHASE. Those Chase/cash bookings provide travel funds back to EACH original passenger, and only good for EACH of those passengers.

Southwest points go back to your SWA account and you can buy tickets for ANYBODY. And, no one year issue either.
