If you find award space on your desired routing, you can certainly change your award ticket. Regardless, I would highly recommend booking a through-ticket.
Some oneworld airlines will still check bags across separate PNRs (CX did last time I asked). Not sure if JL would or not. AA most certainly won't, unless you get an agent willing to break Dougie's rules.
