I saw this at the Westfield in San Diego. The system records your license plate on the way in along with what ticket you were given. When you leave, it reads the plate and knows you paid (based on using the ticket in the machine). Makes exiting super fast. (At the Westfield, if you're in the free two hour window, you don't even need to go to the pay station.) In theory, you don't even need tickets if you just used your license plate at the pay station.
I hate the fact that they set up a paid bar in the evenings. Very tacky.
Paid or honor bar is pretty much the norm for North American properties.
