In Germany when I was younger I've been put on a train by LH where a flight was very delayed or cancelled (or misconnect). They'd print a ticket on BP stock which the train conducter would accept without query. Didn't take much longer than flying really, but Germany is small and their trains are fast. I was 13, *G and travelling alone from South Africa, so all quite exciting
