You are correct. You actually have up to 72 hours to stay in China as long as you have proof of your connecting/ongoing flight.
You might also look into China Eastern business class tickets. It's usually not hard to find $2500/person round trip tickets from the US to SE Asia destinations. Not sure how concrete your plans are in terms of arriving in BKK and leaving from DPS though. Plus you would earn a ton of RDMs, MQMs, and MQDs to help get you qualified for DM next year.
