Several years ago, I requested a points upgrade on QF10 LHR-MEL. I wasn't successful but when re-boarding in DXB, I got the red flashing light when they scanned my BP and a free upgrade for the DXB-MEL sector. It was probably a better result overall as I got J for the long sector and didn't use any points.

Try to do that
