It was the hassle that made me give it up. I rented a house where I had to stand outside and I got fed up with standing in the rain. Add to that at work it was either stand outside in the rain or use the smoking room which made you stink like you had wallowed in an ashtray. That was 20 years ago. I think the increased difficulty now would have made me do it faster. My wife held on until 2008 - I have a photo of her smoking her last one outside T4 before we went off on a big trip - our last BA flight from T4 as we came back into the newly opened T5.
I always hated the smell of it and still do, although it rarely bothers me now of course. I'm all for smoking areas but they should be well ventilated. I think a lot of people don't realise that it's the smell on clothes that lingers.
