I have just returned from Cap Juluca and Malliouhana.
Regarding Cap Juluca, I can only echo BESVISOR's review above.
Pros:
* Great hard product. We were in a one-bedroom suite, which was very spacious, with two full bathrooms, one with the indoor/outdoor concept. The golf cart came in very handy. .
* Excellent beach. I admit I was a bit disappointed when we arrived, as I had extremely high expectations, and the water was less turquoise than expected, plus there was a slight seaweed issue. This was due to heavy wind and rain the day prior, and it greatly improved during our stay. Still not quite as turquoise as Parrot Cay though.
* Overall good service. Housekeeping was excellent. We did not interact with our villa host a lot, but when we had requests they were handled quickly and to our satisfaction. Good service in restaurants, too. The GM was very present throughout our stay, and we often saw him interacting with guests.
* Very nice public areas. We especially liked the feel of Maunday's Club restaurant, with its terrace with sunset views
* Good breakfast. The selection is not overly extensive, but we did not miss anything.
Cons:
* Food options somewhat limited. For dinner, they have Maunday's Club (Peruvian tapas), Cip's (casual Italian), Pimm's (gourmet - did not try). I would have liked a casual seafood/grill/carribean restaurant. The Peruvian tapas was OK, some great ones, some not so great, but definitely not something I can have every night. Cip's did not really work for me. It is supposed to be a reference to Cipriani's in Venice, but I didn't really have an appetite for pasta dishes in the Carribean. Plus quality was very average for the price they charge (USD28++ Spaghetti Bolognese). So, we mostly ventured outside for dinner. For lunch, they also have a food truck serving simple beach fare. This was pretty nice, but being located at the very end of the beach, it was deserted most of the time and thus lacked atmosphere.
* Pool not so great. Obviously, you come here for the beach, and the pool being located directly at the beach was nice enough. Still, service could have been better. They mostly did not set up loungers before 10:30-11 AM, so you had to rummage around to find towels. Iced water was not refilled even if you asked
* Spa. My wife did not like her treatment at all. Very young, inexperienced, therapist. Would not follow my wife's requests to apply less pressure during her massage, and would act annoyed instead. Not a great experience, and did not book again as a result
Tips:
* Villas towards the far end of the beach (I think around #15 upwards) are in a slightly elevated position, and thus ground floor rooms have more privacy. However, the far end of the beach is slightly windier
* Frankly I wouldn't stay in Summer in a room category that does not come with a golf cart. They have bikes, and staff stops and offers rides when they pass you by, but the walk to the restaurant can feel very long in the heat
We found Malliouhana to be great, and were happy that we had split our stay
Pros:
* Hard product full of character. We were in an oceanview junior suite. The colorful decoration gave it a great sense of place (while the Cap Juluca suite, alhtough nice, could have been anyhwere). From the elevated position atop the cliff there was a fantastic sea view. Spacious porch and terrace
* Very nice beach. Malliouhana has its beach area at Meads Bay, which is accessible via stairs. You are not as close to the water from your room as in Cap Juluca, but the walk did not bother us. We found the water at Meads Bay to be calmer on most days. Also, there are quite a few restaurants at the beach in walking distance. The overall feel is less secluded, and the Four Seasons at the other end of Meads Bay is an eyesore, but we were not too bothered. There is also a second, fully private beach, but this is windier
* Great pool. The pool is an infinity pool on two levels (upper level is adults only), with a great sea view. The black-and white cabanas, yellow umbrellas, and palm trees create a really quite special atmosphere
* Excellent food. There is only one venue for dining (Cafe Celeste), but quality was excellent, and we really enjoyed our evenings there. For lunch, there is a beach bar (Leon's), with great tacos, grilled fish etc.
* Efficient service. No mishaps really, so nothing to complain about.
Cons:
* Extremely limited breakfast. Basically, 4 types of pastries, toast, cereals, 4 types of fruit on the buffet. Everything else needs to be ordered. We had a continental breakfast included in our rate, and that contained next to nothing. When we checked out, they generously took everything else that we had ordered off the bill, but communication could have been better. Also, service was very slow
*Service impersonal. As stated above, nothing went wrong. At the same time, we did not interact with staff much. They would hardly engage in conversation. Requests for e.g., restaurant reservations would be handled efficiently, but they would not proactively make recommendations. The GM called the room on the last day (he had been off property). That's OK, I don't feel a need to interact with the GM, but what's the point of such a call?
Comments on transfer to Anguilla
* We had a private boat transfer from Saint Martin, and a hotel-arranged car from the boat dock to the hotel. On arrival, we used Calypso (booked via Malliouhana), on departure we used Funtime (booked via Cap Juluca). Terrible experience both ways, especially when considering the cost (USD 650). The process is just a mess. Exiting the SXM airport terminal, you seek out the boat representative, luggage is loaded into a car, 2-minute car transfer to the Saint Martin boat dock. Fill out departure forms. Queue at passport control exiting Saint Martin. Wait in departure "lounge", i.e., a run-down room with broken seats. There should not be a wait for a private charter, but we had a 30-minute wait. Excuse was we had to wait for customs clearance. I suspect they did not have a boat ready. Tip the porter as your luggage is loaded onto the boat (this is not an employee of the boat company, and there are large signs everywhere that the porters work for tips). Board the boat for the 25 minute journey, which in our case was quite bumpy. Arrive at the Anguilla ferry terminal. Tip another porter and check that all your luggage is unloaded. Queue at passport control. Queue again at customs. Once out of the building, seek out hotel representative, wait in the heat for car to the hotel.
On departure, the process was the same, just in reverse order. The departure "lounge" was overcrowded and there was no seating. Departures would be announced by yelling at people, and we were scolded because we did not react immediately.
* So, would strongly recommend air transfer. Private charter for the 8-minute flight SXM-AXA roughly cost the same as boat charter when we checked, and it can hardly be any worse.
* Ideally, hotels would put in place a transfer like at Parrot Cay, where luggage is taken off you when you exit the airport, the boat brings you to the hotel's dock, and you only see your luggage again in the room. I know that the transfer from Saint Martin to Anguilla involves crossing a border, but there must be a better way to handle this
Also, some comments on Four Seasons. We dined there twice. Food was pretty good. Service appeared to be the most polished among the three hotels. Staff would proactively engage in conversation, although we were not hotel guests. The architecture, which has sometimes been likened to a nuclear power plant, actually appears nicer when you are on property than from a distance. This is a large resort, and there was quite some buzz with a packed sunset bar with live music, and many guests in the adult pool with drinks in their hands (not my thing, but definitely a livelier atmosphere). Part of the rooms are located towards Meads Bay, at the opposite end of Malliouhana. The multi-room residences are located towards Barnes Bay, which I felt is decidedly less nice.
