Are you after specific seats or just want to make sure you're seated together? If it's the latter, at least in my experience when checking in, the system has always assigned seats for me, wife, and son together to the extent possible. Only exceptions were the regional flights with 2x2 seating where I was either in the same row but across the aisle or in the row immediately in front.
