Upgrades on QF2 - two legs or one?

WP with a Y to J upgrade question re QF2 LHR-SYD Tue Aug 20. I have a question about how upgrades work on a flight that has two legs, but books as one - QF2 LHR-SIN-SYD. If you put in an upgrade request, it only allows you to request the whole way LHR-SYD. That's fine, as I want to upgrade the whole way, but does that mean if there's only an upgrade seat for one leg they won't allocate it to you? Or seats available for both legs, but two different seats means they won't allocate them to you? I know Expert Flyer Seat maps are not the same as available seats, but it's interesting seeing the difference between the seat maps and the avails search. EG: QF2 LHR-SYD searched as one flight shows one blocked seat on seat map, everything else allocated, but if you break it down into the two legs there are 8 or 9 seats unallocated for each flight. On the avails search it shows 8 seats still available for purchase LHR-SYD. Does this mean that if they can't find a clear seat the whole way, they don't upgrade people? Or would they do the upgrade as two legs, with two different seats / boarding passes. Is it better to have QF book it as a multi-city two leg flight giving you the possibility of upgrade on one or both legs? (if so I might ring and get them to rebook it that way - it's a Y flexi ticket - but would I then lose my place in the queue in terms of when I requested upgrade?)

Apologies if this is a confusingly worded question.
