Blocked seats are due this very reason. Providing you're on the same PNR and they are correctly flagged as a minor you should be seated together.

Air NZ also have a policy around minors and where they can sit (ie minors sitting next to an unrelated adult male) which can be very frustrating when you end up being moved because of a family who have all been upgraded..
