Get a FIDO phone + get also an analog phone programmed
If you get a FIDO phone without analog capability (ie most of their phones), it used to be possible (now to be comfirmed) to get them to program a second phone (analog) with the same phone number at no extra cost. That permit their custumers to have access to the extended analog network (using Bell's/Telus extended and reliable analog coverage).
This way, you have two phones with the same number. The analog one is totally free if you don't use it, otherwise it's 20 cents per minutes (outside of your FIDO plan).
If you receive a call, the network sends the call to the phone that had the last activity. (most likely it would be the analog phone as it sends a signal every 30 second or so; so better keep it shut).
That may solves the limited FIDO coverage (well, on outgoing calls anyway) and still be able to get the best digital package out there (read FIDO ...)
FIDO works just great in YUL, but have no idea in GTA

PS : Modified for clarity. I totally agree with Ken in the following post; if you can get a hold on one of those superb Nokia 5190, that is then by far the best practical solution. I believe Fido still sells a couple of analog capable phones (quadruple modes?) but they are now pretty expensives.
