The point is that rental agencies can and will come after you for damage long after you drop off the car, unlike what another poster claimed. I linked to the article I did because of the long time frame involved (15 months). But there are many, many other examples discussed in online forums, newspaper articles, etc. I invite you to do some googling if you don't believe me.
