If I as a passenger had paid a small fortune to sit in First Class and some lunatic on a power trip in his economy seat decided to come and sit in the same cabin as I and the crews reaction had been 'oh can I take your cocktail order' i'd be furious. What the heck, why don't we all just do that? Buy the cheapest economy ticket and just move into whichever seat we want and ignore and then verbally assault the cabin crew when asked to return to our allocated seat? What a great idea! Why don't they remove the onboard bar and install a boxing ring so passengers can fight over the empty J/F seats? Actually if i'm staying at the Ibis and there's an empty room in the Fairmont next door I should be entitled to just go stay there, right? Oh, i'm eating my Burger King meal but I spot an empty table in Nobu across the road, i'm gonna go there and demand to be served. Ridiculous!

Well from my occasional visits to the forums for UA/DL/AA reading the DYKWIA threads, the status passengers seem to fight on occasion for premium upgrade on domestic flights. Not to even mention those ridiculous black Friday shopping fights. Or the internet stereotyped blonde woman demanding "I-want-to-speak-to-the-manager". So while in principle one understands that you get what you pay for, there is a lot of self entitlement being thrown around

If this was Saudia it would be a different kettle of fish in my mind. Saudia isn't out there parading itself as a highly regarded international airline recruiting crew from around the world, plying them with booze and connecting them worldwide via the Benidorm of the middle east.
It's as if airlines like EK have split personalities - they are desperate to appear 'western' or shall we say 'arab super light' to a western audience (along with Qatar). They love a good sponsoring of a european football team and throwing around the Dom. Yet, when it comes to how they treat their staff it's a case of 'that's how it's done here, that's the law'.
Morality and ethics is subjective, especially if it is culture driven. Heck you couldn't even get the citizens in the US, all in one country, to agree on the "right thing" about abortion. So unfortunately, while I agree that EK seems to have poorly handled the situation for their staff, objectively there is no compelling reason to expect any different. Also companies around the world will alter their appearances to appear favourable to position themselves favourably to their market, its all about the marketing.
