British Airways Staff Shortages Leave 2,000 Travelers Stranded
"Aug. 24 (Bloomberg) -- British Airways Plc, Europe's second-biggest airline, has canceled more than 30 flights since yesterday, leaving 2,000 passengers stranded at Heathrow Airport as staff shortages and sickness left check-in desks unmanned.
The airline booked 500 people into nearby hotels, while some returned home and the rest slept overnight in the terminals, said British Airways spokeswoman Sophie Greenyer in an interview.``We are not sure how many more flights we'll have to cancel today, but passengers should expect delays,'' said Greenyer.
Most of the flight cancellations were on short-haul routes, while three long-haul flights were also grounded yesterday in a separate incident because of technical problems, Greenyer said."
