For purely AA flights, my experience is that once the "kiosk people" clear you / check-in agent clears you, the boarding pass icon would appear on the AA app. The docs-ok flag is electronic in their computer so at the gate you can board with the mobile bp and a passport.

For AA interline with another carrier, the boarding pass icon will not appear
