I can't answer the first part of your question, and I wouldn't presume to tell you that you weren't lucky, but I am absolutely confident that flights like this are much more common that reading FT would suggest.

Board as strangers, disembark as friends. It happens - although probably not to the people who tell their children that they don't have to say thank you to the crew as they're merely servants.
