AA current policy on endorsing ticket to other airline?

Hi, I have a question about AA's policy to endorse over to UA. I had a flight yesterday evening JFK-CLT-TPA in domestic F. My BA details were in the booking. The JFK-CLT sector was cancelled due to ATC restrictions and the only available option from AA was to fly the following day. I asked about AA endorsing me over to the late flight EWR-TPA and they refused on the basis that the originating airport had to be the same and that UA would reject it if the original booking was from JFK. Is that right? I would have thought that airports considered to be in the same metropolitan area would be accepted?

As I really needed to get home last night if at all possible I ended up cancelling the AA ticket and bought a new ticket on the UA one myself.
