Are you actually finding availability for the specific flights you want at 140,000 points roundtrip? Even so, if the fees are $2700 and your'e finding a business class roundtrip for ~$3000, then I think it's a no brainier. Just buy it and use those points for another trip without so many high fees. If you book an award seat on AA metal (instead of JAL) to get you to NRT, HKG, PEK, etc. and then connect to a partner for the last leg to MNL, the fees would be much lower.

You might also look at airlines with Premium Economy options. Those seats are a good value and offer a much higher level of comfort over coach (they don't recline to lay flat position thought) for not a ton more $$ over coach.
