I have done JNB-HKG/4 days/HKG-BOS, MEL-HKG/2 months/HKG-LAX & LAX-HKG/4 days/HKG-BNE all on CX. I am not aware of any exception originating in Japan. Remember all awards terminate in HKG unless you continue on to North America and a stopover at the gateway is a feature of AS one-way awards, stopovers are even available domestically.
