Not a good idea. JFK L&F only handles items found away from air carrier control. An item found on an aircraft is BA's to deal with. Thus, calling BA is the best way to deal with the issue. If the hold times are long, that is inconvenient, but the best way to go. Particularly if the documents are hard to replaced and particularly because it is likely that the wallet is still on the aircraft, meaning that it has flown multiple segments since OP disembarked.
Hopefully the wallet contains an ID card with a mobile number and email address clearly visible.
Actually , you are incorrect, I left two items on the plane on two separate occasions at JFK and on both occasions I went to the same desk as I described which is staffed by BA uniformed staff and got my items back without calling them or anything else. The desk is specifically for BA and beside it is one for Alaska
