Answers:
1. CX seems to deploy A330 with lie-flat J and premium economy on all HKG-MLE flights in the past year, so in this case, pay extra for J is definitely worth it. I flew HKG-CNS (similar length as MLE) this year, and it was fantastic.

2.
Short Answer: No.
Long Answer: Why do you think a Star Alliance airline will through-check your baggage to an oneworld airline without any sort of codeshare or partnership? They don't even through-check bags for separate reservations on different Star Alliance airlines.
