Here in Europe I normally become aware of getting a room upgrade the day before arrival, when room type on the APP is modified by the hotel (mostly after I have already done mobile check-in).
Right now I am reading a nice "suite with balcony" upgrade (from superior room booked) in a hotel in Italy for tomorrow arrival.
