Seeking Sapphires in the Skies :D
Good Weekend All!
I am very grateful for the information and insight this forum offers. I've found a few threads / question similar to but off the mark of what I would like to ask.
I'm seeking to build up to OW Sapphire and maintain at least Ruby for the next several years and from my initial research, QF seems to check most of the items in my list BUT I've seen a lot of love for BA and AY on this forum and thus I would like to share my situation with the community and seek your advice, perhaps there is something I've missed in my own assessment.
Thank you in advance and Happy Flying
(1) What is most important to you in a FFP?
(upgrades on travel, priority services when flying the airline, extra baggage allowance, good award redemption rates, better award access, free - discounted lounge access, etc.)
Reply:
top requirements, which in order of importance are;
1) Priority Check in
2) Priority Boarding
3) Lounge Access
4) baggage
Miles earning and redemption are not that crucial for me, status benefits are the priority
(2) How many miles do you usually fly each year & in what class? How many flights/sectors?
(<25000, 25000-50000, >50000 miles - <25, 25-50, >50 flights?)
Reply:
about c. 25,000 to 60,000 miles (25,000 would be pleasure and work adds another 25,000 to 30,000)
in economy 60%, in premium economy and business 20% each
about 5 to 10 flights broken into 10 to 25 sectors (due to my location and choice of Airlines, I often have more transit options vs. direct flying options)
(3) What types of fares do you usually buy?
(First, Business, Premium economy, Economy, cheapest)
Reply:
economy 60%, premium economy and business 20% each
(4) Can you choose your airlines and/or class of service? Do you travel for work and/or pleasure?
Reply:
yes and yes, I can choose both
75% pleasure and 25% work
(5) Which routes and airlines do you fly most often?
(US Domestic, Transpacific, Kangaroo, in Asia etc)
Reply:
East Asia (within SEA and South to North) : 60% (most of my economy flights)
SEA to Australia / NZ : 20%
SEA to Europe : 20%
For QF, I estimate it would be convenient to do 2 flights which would give 4 - 8 QF / JQ segments per year (the 8 comes from choosing transit options)
BA and AY, I estimate I can consistently do 1 - 2 flights per year and segments would be 2 - 4
(6) What is your home airport?
(SFO, SCL, London LHR, HKG, Singapore SIN etc.)
Reply:
I move around due to work and so I can easily chose flights originating from either BKK, SIN or KUL easily.
In fact when travelling business fare for pleasure I compare itineraries originating from these three locations to seek the best fares.
I also have little trouble transiting via ICN and HKG and have done so for the last two years
(7) Do you have FFP status of any kind in OW or other airline? What is it? Do you have any miles banked in a FFP?
(AA Executive Platinum, QF Gold, UA 1K, LAN Comodoro, etc)
Reply:
OW Ruby from CX, I've had very little trouble maintaining CX Silver for a while now (due to travel destinations) but also have not been able to justify the cost of progressing to CX Gold
*S Gold, I can maintain this with just half my existing annual travel so I've capacity for OW
(8) Preferred Airlines? Most common Airlines flown on?
Reply:
preferred: SQ, CX, OZ, BR and (LH / LX)
most common: TG, MI, MH (hence why I wish to build up OW status) and OD
I have NEVER FLOWN on QF, BA or AY. I've seen positive reviews of QF and I could easily change my Australia / New Zealand flights to QF.
