I was on the other end of this experience last night - I was on UA1261 ORD-AUS and after the plane boarded and we ended up holding for a handful of connecting pax from the BOS-ORD flight that was out on the remote stand. 10-12 passengers showed up after 20-30 minutes of waiting, but the captain did announce to our plane that the flight was parked at a remote stand.
