BOS-ORD yesterday, when four separate TSRA INVOF ORD during the day. 10:17 flight diverted to MKE, 13:10, 15:15 (my flight) and 14:30 flights all left around 19:00 (after the ground stop was lifted at 18:30) and arrived in ORD. (Was much happier spending time at BOS than ORD in this kind of wx, even if the UA club was not allowing one-time passes … instead I walked to East Boston for a sub.)
Anyway, a new experience was arriving at ORD at a remote stand. Landed on 27R and taxied on Z to park on the
new deice pad on the west side of the airport. 6 ac, all UA, parked there, since the airport was out of gates due to the earlier wx/IRROPS. Also, they were towing baggage carts with a deice pickup truck.
UA/ORD did a decent job of getting us off the plane, despite a lack of equipment (air stairs and buses were in short supply—apparently the Bluth Company stairs were not used—we got on one of the big airport transport buses with low floors and many doors, but others appeared to be going on glorified school buses). No worse than last week at FRA, where the remote stands are planned. Not an experience you have every day, especially in the US! Buses delivered us to a location below B1, which means we actually may have gotten out of the airport faster than if we'd parked at the far end of C (of course, I wasn't making a connection). Wish I'd taken a few more pictures, but here are some.
Notice in the last photo the train of landing lights of AC on final approach!
