It doesn't link or merge the bookings and the seating is done offline by the back office but might be worth calling and asking if TCP can be applied. If it can be done, his seat will show up in his MMB but can't be changed online.
Yes this does apply to oneworld Emeralds as well. So just ring BA and ensure the agent is aware of the Emerald status. We don't see the age of the son, but that would be another route here since if he was under 12 (arguably 14) he would need to be sat near to the adult.
