Wife (Gold) got upgraded 24h in advance flying LAX-JFK on a Saturday night redeye via 500 mile upgrades. She booked a few days before and I just basically checked the loads on ExpertFlyer to see which flight had the most availability in premium cabins. I don't think AA sold a single seat in F prior to the upgrade window, and it was still J7.
