Probably for the same reason that I take my own golf clubs? I prefer to use mine than someone else's.
I suspect BA will at some point roll out something akin to AA's in-app baggage tracking functionality which at least means one knows in advance if luggage isn't on board thus saving the wait while the carousel goes round and round.
