LAX-DFW can be routed via SFO. PHX-DFW cannot.

I can understand not wanting to fly AA, but I'm not sure I understand why PHX-LAX-DFW would have been preferable to PHX-IAH-DFW. The latter is shorter, and if you wind up with a flight disruption at IAH, not only do you have plenty of alternate flights, it's drivable. (Even PHX-DEN-DFW is shorter than PHX-LAX-DFW: LAX is way out of the way).
