Exactly what I came here to say. That's why I find the comparison to gays in the military making people uncomfortable not analogous. The people in question are in a very bad economic situation for a city with such economic resources. I don't think the lesson is that I should just get more comfortable seeing people in sleeping bags on the sidewalk. I haven't lived anywhere else in the past 10 years to do an A/B comparison but I too feel like it does not reflect well on the leadership and governance of the bay area.
NYC has many problems and also has extreme inequity, but there is a much better network of shelters; there’s also more affordable housing in the outer boroughs (with relatively reasonable public transit connections).
NYC also has a much better luxury hotel scene
