YMMV of course. When I used to commute into London, I had a paper season ticket, which would wear out (either print or strip) after about 4 months (barriers at one end of the journey). It lived in my wallet with my cards.

One additional note - ticket barriers also record their use on a magnetic strip. This becomes useful in combatting fraud with open return tickets.
