When I was 7 and my brother was 8, we went to Salamanca, in upstate New York, by the Erie Railroad's Erie Limited on the Fresh Air Fund's summer-away-from-the-city program. In Jersey City we were handed over to the train's conductor, and we were picked up at the Salamanca station by a farm family, but could you image 2 kids being allowed to do this today (this happened in 1950)? The summer in the country, on a farm, by the way, was wonderful.
