I think he will be fine.
Delta flight is early, so chances of problems are less.
Even if you are on the Delta flight in the air and need to cancel or change the WN flight, do it via WIFI in the air. Solves the missed/cancelled flight issue.
Changing terminals in ATL is usually no issue.
Only issues are:
a) Do not arrive in time, then take the DL flight to Gainesville already booked.
b) Can not store your bag on the plane and they gate check it. Then you continue with DL so you can get your bag.
