This statement is not correct. While the original manufacturers of the video system and the moving map has stopped making the equipment, I know of two manufacturers that can supply equipment that will replace the old equipment with new, fully certified, Plug & Play retrofit equipment.
So, basically, airlines choosing not to replace it think that pax don't want it, or are going down the no-frills airline approach to the provision of extra services, ie, not providing.
But look at the bright side, think how much they will save by not having that equipment onboard. It's better for the environment reducing fuel burn and they will pass on the savings to passengers in the form of lower fares.......
