Can't remember if the STL to LGA flights were 727's though ... seems strange to think of widebodies at LGA but seem to remember flying DL from :LGA to Florida on the L1011.
In fact the L-1011 was in part designed specifically with LGA in mind. The DC-10 was as well. I don't think anything larger than a DC-10 can/has operated to LGA. My understanding is the piers the runways are build on cannot support anything heavier.
