There is no right answer to this. Having originally taken a leisurely route I now prefer a one stop route. I would avoid a redeye with a recliner seat. Remember LAX to HNL is farther than LHR to CAIMy preference, and what I will be doing next year, is LHR, LAX, Hawaii destination and return. An early morning return from Hawaii to LAX is recommended with a following overnight flight to Europe.
