In passing, we had a Lockheed Connie come across to Europe about 10 years ago. I saw it at Duxford. On the return they set off from Shannon, were about an hour out, and got an engine failure, so called up for a return to start point on three. Whereupon an RAF Hercules announced they had, completely without notice, been using it as a covert tracking exercise, with all their "clever" kit, and were about 2 miles behind them, visual. So they escorted them back.
