Obviously the flight is going to be canceled so I want to get a head start on rebooking.

My question is, can I do it through United? The less I have to do with AC the better!
I wouldn't say that it's obvious that the flight will be cancelled. Delayed, yes, but cancelled, there's no way to be sure.

Anyway, for rebooking, on the day of the travel, it's the operating carrier (AC) that is responsible for rebooking you. UA may be willing to help, but, strictly speaking, it's not their responsibility.

Also note that you can get MileagePlus points (but not PQD) for flights booked directly with Air Canada, so if that was your only reason to book with United, you needn't have.
